Tomorrow (June 25th), it will have been 59 years since the Korean War had started back in 1950. The war was started (correct me if I am wrong) because North Korea wanted to negotiate elections for the entirety of Korea. With escalating border conflicts, on June 25, 1950, North Korea’s army stormed in on South Korea. With permission and help from the United Nations, the United States stepped in (like we always do, why do we always do this?) to help South Korea. With the Unites States help, South Korea made rapid advances in its counterattack on North Korea, which is when Chinese forces stepped in to help North Korea, shifting the balance of the war. The war went on for three years, ending in July of 1953, but only with an armistice, leaving North Korea still bitter.
Recently, on May 27, 2009, North Korea pulled out of their armistice. In recent months North Korea has threatened the United States with threats of missiles attacks, stating “If the U.S. imperialists start another war, the army and people of Korea will… wipe out the aggressors on the globe once and for all.” And accusing Washington of seeking to “provoke a second Korean War”.
North Korea is planning on launching a few test missiles and the Unites States believes they may fire a short missile between June 25 and July 10th, with the U.S. urging that Japan’s Coast Guard have a no-sail ban for military drills. North Korea has also previously threatened the U.N. that it will fire a long-range missile, due to the U.N.’s condemnation for missiles.
We (the United States) currently have 28,500 troops in South Korea to protect against any outbreak of another war or hostilities for war from North Korea. If North Korea would have won the Korean War, the nightmare of tyranny would have taken over the South as it had the North, just like when Japan had taken over North Korea (decades before the Korean War), which is a darkness that they have not emerged from. Back when Japan took over North Korea, they had also taken away any food or industrial supplies, leaving North Korea in poverty and many men and women fled North Korea for that reason.
The news that North Korea is still not at peace with the United Nations or United States is rather unnerving. I have faith in our military, but I also do not want to see more men and women killed like in Iraqi Freedom. I am hoping that we too have special warfare material in case of instances like North Korea has with its biochemical warfare. In either Country, the last I want to see is innocent people killed. It saddens me to see that North Korea will not sign a peace treaty with the United Nations. Our military is larger now than it was in the 1950’s and now we also have other Countries willing to take our side, so good luck to you North Korea – you are making a BIG mistake. Think about your people, have respect for yourself and your Country you no longer have to live the way that Japan forced you to; make peace – not war.
